What Kind of Tape to use for Plantar Fasciitis and how to use it

Beginning your day with stabbing heel pains isn’t exactly the best start, but this is a daily reality for those suffering from plantar fasciitis.

This is one of the most common causes of heel pain in adults, so multiple so-called solutions have popped up.

However, only a few of these have proven effective.

In fact, medication is only available in the form of prescription pain killers.

Unfortunately, this is merely a temporary solution. Other options are leg exercises, but these can take a while to kick in, and aren’t extremely effective.

And if you’re thinking surgery – this hasn’t been much of a help either.

Consequently, people are turning to some unconventional but effective means of pain relief. One such solution is taping.

Which Tape Should You Use?

When we say taping, we don’t mean for you to pick up the first roll of duct tape you find and wrap it all around.

Instead, a special tape must be employed and wrapped around in a certain way to provide pain relief.

Doctors have recommended the use of hypoallergenic tapes such as KT Tape for this reason.

Moreover, this tape is also latex-free to prevent irritation.

It has been created in such a way as to allow for optimum movement of muscles and blood circulation. Moreover, being sweat proof, you know it won’t just come off in a few hours. However, don’t keep it on for too long, because your feet need to breathe too!

How To Wrap the Kinesio Tape Around?

Since you’re using a special tape, you might as well use a unique taping method.

But before you begin, there are some things to remember.

  1. Firstly, ask your physician about it. You don’t want to begin taping only to discover the pain has worsened!
  2. Once you get the green light from your doctor, and have the roll of tape in hand, wash your feet and ensure that they’re completely dry.
  3. Remember to always, no matter what, avoid wrinkles. For this, you need to keep your foot in neutral while you tape it up. That’s because wrinkles can lead to blisters, so keep straightening out the tape or suffer the consequences.
  4. Also, don’t wrap it around too tight – you don’t want to cut off the blood circulation from your foot!
  5. And if you begin feeling any numbness at any point, don’t hesitate to pull that tape straight off!

Now that you’re ready, let’s start!

Step 1:
Relax your foot so that its in neutral – no stretching of muscles required. Now take that tape and let it go around the heel, stretching from the bottom of the big toe to the bottom of the pinkie – making a neat ‘U’.

Step 2:
To keep this in place, you now need an anchor tape. So this one should be placed across the foot stretching from the bottom of the big toe to the pinkie.

Step 3:
Now, for added support, imagine a teardrop shape, because that’s what you will be making. Begin from the bottom of the big toe, go all the way across the heel, and return to where you began from. Repeat this with the little pinkie toe as well, so that you have two overlapping teardrops on your feet.

Step 4:
After this, you will just trace the shape formed by the two overlapping teardrops. If this sounds a little confusing, imagine those awareness ribbons you normally see – now this is what you’re going to recreate. So begin from the bottom of your pinkie toe, cross your foot to the other end of the heel, and follow the curve. Now continue along the curve, then cross the foot again until your tape reaches the end of your big toe – and that’s it. Imagine an ‘X’ connected by a curve at the top!

Step 5:
Finally, just go over from end to end of your sole and cover off all the skin that you can see. This is a great way to seal off your foot while also ensuring that you get optimum support in the process.

This taping has proven to be extremely effective among many patients. It isn’t a permanent solution, but it does provide considerable relief – so why not give it a shot? After all, if you’re the one in pain and nearly nothing seems to work, what have you got to lose? It is perhaps one of the best solutions that doesn’t involve medicinal drugs or surgery, and can be cost-effective as well. All you need is one roll of Kinesio Tape, and your doctor’s approval to get started!
