There is a lot of confusion between actual Scotch brand tape (which applies to many different types of tape) and what people consider to be Scotch tape which is often any kind of transparent adhesive tape.
The reason it is called Scotch tape is more because of a sense of frustration than anything.
Back in 1925, Richard Drew was testing some masking tape. The car painter he was using to test the pain became extremely frustrated with the lack of stickiness of the tape and in a fit of rage burst out:
“Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!
Well, we don’t mean to try to be funny, but the name stuck.
