When James Comey, Former Director of the CIA, talked about taping up his webcam the world took notice.
Because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.
Mark Zuckerberg also covers up the camera’s on his devices.
It may sound like something out of a movie script but the fact remains that there is a real possibility that a hacker could take control of your webcam.
Best Webcam Tape to Use
Depending on what kind of tape you have lying around the house almost anything will do the job. Here are some options:
- Some people use Duct tape although that can be a bit aggressive
- Painters tape can be a good option but looks a bit ugly depending on the color of your laptop
- Washi tape will do the job
- Post it notes (They can be prone to falling off though)
If you have a laptop or a smartphone there are some great little sliders that you can buy from Amazon. These let you use your webcam whenever you want, then you just slide over the cover when you are done.
You can also buy purpose-built stickers for all sizes of webcams. These are a lot nicer to look at than a chunk of tape and are normally designed not to leave sticky residue behind.
You can often reapply a few times before they lose their stickiness.
Don’t forget the cameras on your phone and your tablet as well.
Webcam stickers and sliders can be a great gift idea and have become very popular as a stocking filler.
Sometimes I worry about the future when cars are self-driving. Will they be not only watching but following us around as well?
Although the chances of a hacker actually spying on you through your webcam are small, your privacy is very important.
